48th International Festival of Organ Music in Oliwa
The International Festival of Organ Music at the Oliwa Cathedral has the longest history of any musical event of its kind in Poland. For almost half a century, Tuesday and Friday nights in July and August have brought the Oliwa organ back to life with the music of both early masters and blossoming new creations. The cathedral organ is an instrument of unrivalled sound, construction, and potential. It consists of two sections: the central instrument, and the side prospectus. The performer can play them both from a single keyboard achieving stereophonic effects. The opulence of the Baroque ornamentation is enhanced with movement - trumpets, angel bells, and whirling stars set in motion while playing. The annual festivals attract celebrity virtuosos from all over the world.
Concerts every Tuesday and Friday
St Dominic Fair
If you’re picking and choosing a time to visit Gdansk based on the myriad of exciting events this summer, look no further! The tradition and splendor of St Dominic’s Fair go back to the 13th century. Held on the last Saturday of July, it once drew crowds of German, French, English, and even Spanish and Portuguese merchants to Gdansk’s medieval shores. The port took in over 400 ships filled to the brim
French and Spanish wine, silk, fruits and syrups, spices, tin, and clothes fit for a king. Not the types to miss out on all the fun, circus performers, acrobats, magicians, and
Theatre troops rode into Gdansk on that wave of riches.
Today, the fair continues to attract both tourists and residents combining its commercial roots with a kinetic programme of cultural and sporting events. The scale
Gdansk’s fair stands in close comparison to such acclaimed European events like Munich’s Octoberfest or Hamburg’s Weinachtsmarkt.
Folk Festival of the European Broadcasting Union /EBU/
Long Market and St John Centre
The EBU Folk Festival is an established event with a 25-year history. The host country changes every year. In 2005 it will be organized in Gdansk by Polish Radio to mark the station's 80th jubilee. The idea behind the event is to promote European national traditions, support ethnical and national identity, and promote young artists who turn to the local music for inspiration.
There are typically about 20 bands representing a cornucopia of European broadcasting stations. They are typically some of the most noteworthy performers of the year; therefore the festival always attracts huge audiences, no matter its location. The festival status is enhanced by the representation of a dozen European countries and a number of international concert transmissions.
8th Gdansk Carillon Festival
The Carillon Festival is a perfectly unique musical event in Poland. This is because Gdansk is the only Polish city to have the two precious instruments needed! One is the carillon of the Main City Town Hall, the other is the concert bell set at St Catherine's Church. The festival is another example of the city reviving its ancient traditions. Its programmes are mostly made up of solo
performances. The repertoire provides a cross-section of exquisite masterpieces from carillon-music literature, ranging from Baroque pieces by Johann Sebastian
Bach to the 20th century compositions by Arthur Rubinstein.
10th Shakespearean Festival
The Shakespearean Festival has taken place in Gdansk every year since the city’s millennial celebration in 1997. The event is rooted in the Renaissance tradition of having
English theatrical troupes visit the city to perform some of the best theater the English language has to offer. Ambitious and interesting, the festival provides an international overview of the most interesting productions
from the works of the Master of Stratford. Shakespeare invariably remains fashionable, up to date, and inspiring. All that is most valuable in his output, universal truths and ever-present human emotions, have remained unchanged throughout the ages. It’s these sentiments that make the festival so popular among the spectators and so highly regarded in theatrical circles.

Each year, Gdansk turns into the capital of the Compact Disc. The Tri-City hosts musicians, directors, artists, and production managers, and honors past achievements while keeping an eye out for what’s up and coming.
Yach Film is the only event of its kind in Poland and one of the few in Europe.
It is a competition distinguishing the creative minds behind the best Polish Music Videos. Realizing the ever-growing interest in the event, its organizers have broadened the formula and since 2001, Yach Film has been accompanied by the ‘Videoclip Festival of the Scandinavian and Baltic States,’ which gives the undertaking an international status.
